8:40AM…..KENNEBUNK BEACH…..UPDATE
Kennebunk is not looking much better now.
1-2ft semi choppy knee high with a couple thigh high sets.
Not peeling well at all.
It is surfable there but today is a good day to take
a ride and check out some south or east facing beaches.

5:45AM…..KENNEBUNK BEACH…..SUNDAY MORNING
Dead low tide and not much swell making it into kennebunk.
1ft…knee high with a couple sets pushing thigh high.
Wind is southwest so kennebunk has a bit of side chop.
It is surfable but non south facing beaches would be a better choice.
Ogunquit river mouth would likely be one of the best spots for
a paddle out today.
Tomorrow more southwest winds and we will bump up another foot.
We should have solid thigh high sets at kennebunk with
a chance of waist high at the better tides.
Even tomorrow kennebunk will not be the best choice for a paddle out.
Tuesday…thigh high side chop at kennebunk.
I will update the report in a couple hours.

The industry*
In the 60s Hollywood and big business tried to cash in on the new surfing craze with “Gidget movies” and “pop out” boards.
Back then, pop out boards were made in the U.S.A and 1/2 the cost as the hand made boards…as they should be…
But it did not work…Pop Out boards did not stay around.

In the most recent surfing boom, big business got much more clever.
This time big business left the U.S. for the cheaper, overseas non-surfer labor… and with the absence of American EPA keeping an eye on the overseas factories.
On top of that, they use the cheapest materials available and can build a board for 1/8 the price as a board made by an American surfer/shaper.

The massive pop out companies are then charging close to the same price for their boards as the U.S. hand-made boards.
The second half of their business plan is giving surf shop owners much larger mark ups than the hand made companies can…so the shop owners are very likely to push new surfers into the pop out market. Everyone wins but the beginner surfer. Why start off with the handicap of riding an inferior surfboard that does not ride as well as the “real thing?”
If money is an issue…buying a used Surfer-shaped board will progress your surfing faster and in return be more fun to ride than a brand new mass produced board.
A snowboarder would do incredibly better on a $200 used Burton than he could ever do on a brand new $200 Wal-Mart snowboard.
Surfing is no different…Except that surf shops sell the
Wal-Mart type surfboards(pop outs & China boards)…Snowboard shops don’t.
Buy a quality Surfer/Shaper hand made used board if you can not afford a new hand-shaped board.
To put it simply…How well your surfboard rides will directly affect how good you get and how much fun you will have.
